Peck & Peck by Bonnie Garmus – poetry and posturing in ’80s New York

Bonnie Garmus, once a poetry skeptic, has transformed her perspective into Peck & Peck, a novel that explores the vibrant yet chaotic world of 1980s New York poetry publishing. The book, set in 1982, follows Batter Gray, a 25-year-old poet who lands a job at the prestigious Peck & Peck journal, only to confront the absurdities of a profession that values art as much as profit. Garmus, known for her debut Lessons in Chemistry, which became a global phenomenon, now turns her lens to the literary world, blending humor with a passionate defense of poetry.

From Skeptic to Advocate

The novel’s premise is rooted in Garmus’s own experiences and research. She drew from her background as a copywriter and her time at the Colorado Institute of Art, where she studied typography. I used imperatives like ‘Find originality,’ ‘Reward creativity,’ and ‘Burn the rest.’ as mottos for the fictional journal, she explained. The story also reflects her interviews with twins and her fascination with the dynamics of sibling rivalry, as seen in the feuding Peck brothers who run the journal.

A Satirical Take on Publishing

Peck & Peck is as much a comedy of errors as it is a love letter to poetry. The novel’s setting—a fantastical, five-story building with a glass dome and a rooftop aviary—mirrors the eccentricities of the publishing world. Garmus satirizes the industry’s obsession with profit, depicting a journal that destroys submissions deemed unworthy and employs parolees in its mailroom. The stakes are even more wonderfully disproportionate, wrote The Guardian, noting the absurdity of a world where there is seldom much money to distribute, yet there is apparently an inexhaustible supply of resentment.

The novel’s humor is balanced by its heartfelt moments. Batter’s struggles with his career and personal life, including the revelation of his twin brother’s death, add depth to the narrative. Stuart Nulman, a reviewer for Mtltimes, highlighted that the novel’s depiction of Batter’s journey offers a humanizing perspective within its chaotic narrative.
