Penn State wrestling continues to solidify its position as a national powerhouse,securing a commitment from Landon Sidun,the No. 2 overall wrestler in the 2027 class according to FloWrestling. The addition of Sidun,a Pennsylvania native,further strengthens a program aiming for an unprecedented fifth consecutive NCAA title.
A Rising Star Commits to the Nittany Lions
Sidun, a junior at Norwin High School, announced his decision to wrestle for Penn State on Monday via social media. “I am extremely excited to announce that I’ve committed to Penn State to further my wrestling and academic career!” Sidun wrote in an Instagram post.”I believe Penn State will be the best fit for me, and I can succeed in many aspects. Thank you to my coaches, teammates, family, and friends who have been by my side along this journey and got me to this point.I cannot wait for this next adventure.”
Boasting a remarkable 72-2 record through two high school seasons, Sidun is already a proven champion, having secured a PIAA championship as a freshman in 2023. His impressive 30-0 run last season was sadly cut short by injury in February. He is projected to compete at 125 pounds for the Nittany Lions.
Building a Dynasty: Sanderson’s Recruiting Success
Sidun joins Gavin Mangano, a New York state champion from Shoreham-Wading River High, as the second commitment in Penn State’s 2027 recruiting class.Mangano, who committed in late September, is ranked No. 17 overall in the 2027 class by FloWrestling. His story is particularly inspiring; he won his second New York Division II state championship in March while competing with a broken leg, receiving his gold medal in a wheelchair. Mangano trains at the KD Training Center, the same facility that developed current Penn State freshman PJ Duke.
The success of Cael Sanderson’s recruiting efforts extends beyond the 2027 class. While Penn State is reaping the benefits of future talent, other top wrestlers recently chose different paths.Pennsylvania stars Bo bassett and Melvin Miller, brothers from Bishop McCort, committed to Virginia Tech on October 4. Bassett is the No. 2 recruit in the 2026 class, and Miller currently holds the top ranking for 2027.
Chasing History: Penn State’s Pursuit of a Fifth Title
The Nittany Lions are gearing up for the 2025-26 season, opening their schedule against Oklahoma on November 14 at the Bryce Jordan Center.The program is aiming for an unprecedented fifth consecutive NCAA wrestling title,having already set tournament scoring records in the past two seasons.
Sanderson is entering his 16th season as Penn State’s head coach with the nation’s longest active winning streak. The team has won 71 consecutive dual matches dating back to the 2020 season, the second-longest streak in Division I men’s wrestling history. Only Oklahoma State,with 76 consecutive victories,holds a longer streak,a record Penn State could perhaps break in December.
The Nittany Lions’ roster is stacked with talent,including returning national champions Mitchell mesenbrink (2025) and Levi Haines (2024),as well as five All-Americans who placed fifth or better at their respective weight classes last season. Recent additions to the team include former NCAA runner-up Rocco Welsh from Ohio State and 2024 world freestyle champion Masanosuke Ono,further bolstering Penn State’s championship aspirations.
The program’s recruiting success is also aided by events like the Penn State-Oregon White Out football game, which has become a notable recruiting opportunity for the entire Penn State athletic department.
