Peter Maffay’s worst concert: “Rolling Stones” dream turned into nightmare

by time news

Hardly anyone can imagine that Peter Maffay and his band were booed on stage in 1982 and had tomatoes and eggs thrown at them. Peter Maffay appeared as the opening act for his idols, the “Rolling Stones”, who played an additional concert on July 5, 1982 in the Müngersdorfer Stadium in Cologne. The Stones’ fans, however, didn’t like Maffay and his band and expressed it accordingly.

Everything flew onto the stage – including eggs. It was a shock. It was humiliating.

The organizers had chosen Peter Maffay as the opening act because the German rocker was one of the most successful musicians in the country at the time and also fit in well with the Stones stylistically. Three years earlier, Maffay had his legendary album “Steppenwolf” released, and from then on the musician occupied the top ranks of the German charts practically non-stop. Neither the organizer nor Peter Maffay had expected the negative reaction from the “Rolling Stones” fans.
However, Maffay said many years later in the Playboy podcast that this experience also brought him a bit forward. “I think if we hadn’t gotten our act together, we would have become megalomaniacal.”

42 years have now passed since then, in which Peter Maffay has become one of the most successful German musicians with 20 number one albums and over 50 million records sold. He is also the co-inventor of the fairy tale and cartoon character Tabaluga. Peter Maffay has been honored with countless awards, including the BAMBI three times. When he received the Lifetime Achievement Award last year, he said:

This award surprises me as much as it pleases me. If the work we do together has led to the decision to honor us in this way, I would like to thank you for it.
