Hungary will not participate in any EU initiatives involving the supply of weapons to Ukraine. This was stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations of Hungary, Peter Szijjártó, speaking on the radio station’s Sunday program, Day.Az reports with reference to TASS Kossuth.

He noted that “Hungary remains unwilling to participate in political and financial actions that involve the supply of more weapons to Ukraine.” “The more weapons are sent there, the longer the war will go on, the more people will die, the greater the risk of destruction and further spread of hostilities,” the foreign minister explained.

“On the part of Hungary, there is simply no question of supplying weapons, participating in them and making the necessary decisions for this,” Szijjártó emphasized. In his opinion, “if European politicians had spent even half as much time on peacekeeping as on arms deliveries, then today we could say that we were closer to peace and were able to protect the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.”

On March 18, EU foreign ministers at a meeting in Brussels approved an increase in the European Peace Fund by €5 billion to provide military assistance to Ukraine, including financing the supply of weapons and military equipment. Hungary abstained from making this decision, saying that it was not responsible for this and would not allocate funds for this purpose. As Szijjártó said then, Hungary will allocate the €50 million it has allocated to this fund, but its contribution will be used at its own discretion – not for military assistance to Ukraine, but, for example, for strengthening security in the Western Balkans.
