Philippe Diallo has finally finished unpacking his boxes in his new office. This spacious room, on the third floor of the Paris headquarters of the French Football Federation (FFF), in the 15e arrondissement, was still recently occupied by Noël Le Graët, president of the authority for nearly twelve years. There are no longer any personal effects of the 81-year-old former leader, who resigned on February 28 and carried away by the startling conclusions of the audit carried out at the “3F”, at the request of the Ministry of Sports, by the general inspection of education, sport and research (IGESR).
Interim boss of the FFF since January 11 and the withdrawal of Mr. Le Graët, Philippe Diallo, 59, will strengthen his political base, Saturday June 10, during the federal assembly organized in Paris, by becoming officially – at 10 a.m. – the new president of the powerful federation . An institution in full reconstruction, after a long governance crisis and a litany of scandals. Placed under the close supervision of the members of his executive committee (comex), including the ex-president of Olympique Lyonnais Jean-Michel Aulas, he is supposed to complete the mandate of his predecessor which expires in December 2024.
Son of a Senegalese boxing champion, the affable leader, who has become Noël Le Graët’s replacement by virtue of his status as deputy vice-president of the FFF, does he aspire to retain the throne beyond? “I had a lot of crises to manage, a lot of work to do and not enough time to project myself towards deadlines that are still quite distant”, prudently dodges Philippe Diallo, whom his critics describe as “lowest common denominator”, d’“apparatchik”, of “sphinx without spine”or “eel capable of sneaking around with skill”.
Because the very diplomatic Mr. Diallo has struggled since the fall of his predecessor, targeted by a preliminary investigation by the Paris prosecutor’s office for “moral and sexual harassment”, and by its general manager, Florence Hardouin, who is contesting his dismissal before the industrial tribunal. This is evidenced by the list of files processed since February : reform of the governance of arbitration, emergency replacement of the coach of Les Bleues, Corinne Deacon, by Hervé Renard, creation of a women’s professional league, finalization of an agreement to modify in 2024 the method of election to the presidency of the FFF in accordance with the law on the democratization of French sport, recruitment of the new general manager of the federation, Jean-François Vilotte, lawyer for the comex of the FFF during the inspection of the IGESR…
