A thrilling season culminated in a historic victory for Lando Norris, who clinched his first Formula 1 World Championship at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix early Monday morning (AEDT). The McLaren driver finished third in the race, strategically securing enough points to edge out reigning champion Max Verstappen by a mere two points in the season standings.
NorrisS triumph marks a significant moment for British motorsport, ending a four-year drought as lewis Hamilton‘s championship win in 2020. The 26-year-old’s victory also halted Verstappen’s bid for a fifth consecutive title.
A Three-Way Battle to the Finish
The championship race came down to a tense showdown between Norris, Verstappen, and Norris’s McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri. Piastri, also vying for his first F1 title, finished second in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix and ultimately secured third place in the overall standings, 13 points behind the newly crowned champion.
Norris entered the final race with a 12-point lead over Verstappen and a 16-point advantage over Piastri. The complex championship permutations meant Verstappen needed Norris to finish fourth or lower, while a win for Piastri coupled with a finish outside the top five for Norris would have also swung the title.
Verstappen’s Charge Falls Short
Despite starting from pole position and ultimately winning the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix – his eighth win of the season and 71st of his career – Verstappen was unable to overcome the points gap. His late-season surge, fueled by consistent victories, nearly unseated the McLaren duo, who had previously dominated much of the season. However, strategic errors throughout the year proved costly.
“Even Verstappen’s season-leading eighth win could not stop Norris, who kept his composure despite having been under severe pressure in recent weeks,” a source reported.
Emotional victory for Norris and McLaren
The McLaren team erupted in celebration as Norris crossed the finish line. CEO Zak brown instantly radioed the champion, exclaiming, “Lando, this is Zak from McLaren. Is this the world champion hotline? You did it! You did it! Awesome.”
Norris was overcome with emotion, struggling to articulate his joy.”Oh my god, thanks so much. I love you guys. Thanks for everything,” he said, before breaking down in tears.
Following the race, Norris shared a poignant moment with his parents on the track before celebrating with his engineers and mechanics. The victory represents a culmination of years of dedication and a testament to the team’s collaborative spirit.
