Breast cancer is the most common tumor in women worldwide, and has a special incidence in women between 45 and 65 years of age.

According to the Cancer Observatory, in 2022, in Spain, 34,740 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Thanks to research, prevention and early detection, mortality from this disease has decreased significantly. In recent years, the average 5-year breast cancer survival has been increased to 85%.

Despite this increase in survival, there is still much to do and that is why, from the Association we want to recover the mobilizing origin of the color pink, through the ‘Pink is more than a color’ campaign.

That “pink” reflects the movement of the union of patients and entities against breast cancer, it means highlighting all the great advances that have been achieved, but there is still much to do: promote greater participation in early detection, reduce the impact emotional and social and have more research in complex breast cancers.

Behind the pink are also the social and emotional needs of all women with breast cancer, such as the impact at work and economic levels derived from the disease and also the impact on the family and self-image.

For this reason, all support services provided by the Association are free of charge. In 2022, throughout Spain, we will serve 30% of the total number of women diagnosed with breast cancer each year.

Therefore, how can we try to reduce mortality from the disease? Participation in screening programs is important. Early diagnosis allows breast cancer to be detected in its initial phase, when symptoms or signs have not yet appeared. This is the objective of population screening programs, through which tests are periodically carried out on the healthy population with the intention of detecting cancer in its initial stages.

The chances of curing breast cancers that are detected in their earliest stage (in situ) are practically 100%. In general, the sooner the diagnosis is made, the more likely the disease will be cured.

Currently, in Spain, population screening for breast cancer is established by the National Health System, within its portfolio of services, to be carried out in all autonomous communities and cities.

This is implemented by performing biennial mammography (every 2 years) on women between 50-69 years old. These recommendations apply to asymptomatic women.

In any case, if suspicious symptoms appear, the study must be carried out with the appropriate tests to reach the diagnosis.

The essential recommendations that we make from the association are, therefore: adopt healthy lifestyle habits, and participate in population-based breast cancer screening programs. And if you have any questions or suspicions, do not hesitate to consult with your doctor.

Even so, it must be remembered that not all tumors are the same and some cases, such as metastatic breast cancer, still have a poor prognosis and it is necessary to continue increasing research to increase survival. That is why pink is a movement that we must follow to promote research into complex breast cancers.
