New Delhi: The People’s Liberation Army and the Manipur Naga People’s Front (MNPF) have claimed responsibility for an attack on a convoy of troops in Churachandpur district of Manipur. A joint statement issued by the two organizations said the attack was carried out to protect their own people.

The group said in a statement that it was “protesting against attempts to suppress the rights of the land and the people. We will not remain silent until the rights are restored.” The People’s Liberation Army was formed in 1978 with the objective of liberating Manipur and separating it from India.

Colonel Viplav Tripathi, an officer of the 46th Assam Rifles, and four soldiers were martyred in the attack. The Colonel’s wife and four-year-old son were killed. The militants attacked a group returning from an army camp in Churachandpur, which shares a border with Myanmar, around 10 am on Saturday.
