The latest generation of activists has once again targeted Sylt Airport. They managed to breach the fence and attach themselves to the tarmac next to a private jet. The group is also protesting at other airports in Germany.
Two activists clung to the ground for a while next to a private jet at the airport on the North Sea island of Sylt. Their attempt to spray paint on the plane was foiled by swift intervention from airport staff. The activists had previously cut a hole in the airport fence to gain access to the site.
A third activist was apprehended by police officers and taken away. Women were also removed from the ground and detained in a police car. To deter onlookers, firefighters positioned two large fire trucks in front of the private jet. The activists originally planned to spray the words ”Oil Kills” on the private jet.
Despite the failed action, the group’s spokesman, Christian Bergmann, declared that their protests would continue. Flight operations at Sylt Airport were unaffected by the incident, according to flight schedules online.
Protesters believe that millionaires and billionaires disproportionately contribute to climate change. They argue that owners of private jets, limousines, and superyachts will not voluntarily give up these emissions-intensive luxuries. They call for legislation to reduce these emissions.
This action follows similar protests in June 2023, when five activists from the Last Generation group in Sylt sprayed orange paint on a private jet and glued themselves to it. The public prosecutor’s office in Flensburg estimated the damage caused by the incident to be at least one million euros.
Protests at other airports
Meanwhile, other members of the group staged demonstrations at several other airports across Germany. At Dortmund Airport, activists poured black paste on the floor and displayed banners reading “Oil Kills.” Fourteen activists were detained at Stuttgart Airport, where they protested with posters, banners, flyers, and speeches.
In recent weeks, Last Generation activists have temporarily halted flight operations at Frankfurt am Main Airport and Cologne/Bonn Airport, and disrupted freight operations at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The organization reported that eight of their apartments were raided by police on Thursday. Despite these measures, the group announced their intention to continue their protests, despite what they claim to be a concerted attempt by the authorities to intimidate them.
