Xiaomi’s HyperOS 3 Arrives Globally with Poco F8 Ultra,Ushering in Android 16 Era

Xiaomi is rolling out its latest operating system,HyperOS 3,to global markets with the launch of the Poco F8 Ultra and F8 pro,both shipping with Android 16 out of the box. The company is backing the new software with a commitment to four major OS upgrades and five years of security updates.
This isn’t the first glimpse of HyperOS 3, though. Developers previously had access to a Chinese version of the ROM running on the Xiaomi 17 Pro max, offering an early look at the software’s capabilities.
A familiar Yet Refined Interface
Visually, HyperOS 3 doesn’t represent a radical departure from its predecessor, but Xiaomi has focused on subtle refinements. Animations have been smoothed and accelerated, and system icons have been redesigned with a flatter, simpler aesthetic.
One of the most notable additions is “Hyper Island,” a feature clearly inspired by Apple’s Dynamic island on iOS. This pill-shaped bubble appears around the selfie camera and dynamically displays data from running apps – album art from music players,timer countdowns,or recording status from the voice recorder,for example.Users can cycle through multiple active apps via a swipe gesture.
seamless Connectivity Across Ecosystems
HyperOS 3 places a strong emphasis on connectivity, expanding beyond the Xiaomi ecosystem with its “hyper Connect” features. Previously limited to sharing data between Xiaomi devices logged into the same account, HyperOS 3.0 now enables seamless data sharing with non-Xiaomi Android devices, and also Apple’s iPads and iPhones, and even Windows and Mac computers. According to a company release, users will be able to read notifications and answer calls directly from thier iPads, Macs, or iPhones.
AI Integration and Performance enhancements
The HyperAI features remain largely consistent with previous iterations, offering assistance with writing, transcription, translation, and even generating subtitles for YouTube videos. Users can also create dynamic wallpapers from still images.
Xiaomi claims to have made under-the-hood adjustments to improve HyperOS’s efficiency and performance, though quantifying these improvements remains difficult. “As is usually the case, those things can’t be measured,” one analyst noted, “so we must rely on Xiaomi’s assertions.” Despite the lack of concrete data, initial impressions suggest a smooth and responsive user experience.
Poco F8 Ultra: power Under the Hood
The Poco F8 Ultra is equipped with Qualcomm’s latest flagship processor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Manufactured on a 3nm process, the chip boasts an octa-core Oryon CPU, a new Adreno GPU, and an improved Hexagon NPU. Xiaomi states the CPU is 20% faster than the previous generation, the GPU is 23% faster, and the NPU sees a 37% performance boost.
The review unit features 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of UFS 4.1 storage, with a 12GB/256GB variant also available.
Benchmark Performance and Thermal Considerations
The F8 Ultra demonstrated remarkable performance in benchmark tests, achieving top-tier CPU scores in GeekBench and leading numbers in Antutu 11. Graphics performance was slightly behind other devices utilizing the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, but the difference is unlikely to be noticeable in real-world usage.
However, sustained performance under heavy load proved less consistent. The CPU experienced a significant decline in performance, dropping to roughly 60% of its initial result within 20 minutes and falling below 30% shortly thereafter. The GPU exhibited a 60% stability rating in the 3D Mark Wild Life Stress test. Surface temperatures also rose considerably, reaching 58 degrees Celsius near the camera island and 50 degrees Celsius along the frame. While not uncomfortable to hold,these temperatures are higher than typically observed.
Despite the thermal concerns, the Poco F8 Ultra and the arrival of HyperOS 3 represent a significant step forward for Xiaomi, bringing the latest Android experience and a host of new features to a global audience.
