His latest work was only visible briefly: a red stop sign with three military drones. As soon as the legendary street artist Bansky confirmed on Friday that the work of art was his, it was already stolen.

The lightning robbery was followed by the lightning manhunt.

The London police didn’t hesitate for long either: a suspect was arrested on Saturday. This is reported by the BBC.

Man arrested

The police allege: Suspicion of theft and damage to property.

The artwork was just installed on the corner of Commercial Way, Peckham, southeast London, on Friday. But within an hour it was dismantled and stolen by a man with bolt cutters. Because onlookers had already gathered around the work of art, the act was filmed and photographed.

Investigations are still ongoing

The police did not comment in more detail on the whereabouts of the work of art or the status of the investigation. The arrested man remains in custody.

“We are aware that footage was shared showing the sign being removed,” police said, according to the BBC. The police therefore called on anyone with information about the incident or the whereabouts of the Banksy stop sign to inform the authorities.

A new traffic sign was also installed to avoid endangering road users.

The spokeswoman for the London district where the Banksy artwork hung is optimistic. There would be full confidence that it would be returned, said Jasmine Ali: “We’re not just talking about a street sign, it’s a work of art that was put there for the community. It’s street art and it’s for the people.”
