Late Saturday night, a tense situation unfolded at the Speedway in Ceredo, WV, when police arrived at the scene. Law enforcement officers from the Huntington and Wayne detachments were assisting the Kenova Police Department in locating a suspect wanted for committing a murder in Ironton, Ohio.

The suspect, identified as David Maynard, 54, of Ironton, Ohio, was also believed to be involved in multiple felony offenses in Kentucky. Despite their efforts, officers were unable to locate Maynard during the search.

However, WVSP Sergeant Pennington, who happened to stop at the Ceredo Speedway, recognized Maynard and observed him standing behind the counter with the clerk. As Sgt. Pennington was outside the store, Maynard pointed a pistol at him, leading to a hostage situation.

In response, local law enforcement, along with a State Police Special Response Team, swiftly arrived at the scene. A hostage negotiator was also brought in to negotiate with Maynard, resulting in the release of two out of the three hostages.

During the negotiations, Maynard made a request for a blanket, which he wanted to be placed at the front door. Subsequently, he exited the store and confronted the Special Response Team members, prompting shots to be fired.

Medical officials immediately provided aid to Maynard and transported him to a nearby hospital. Unfortunately, he eventually succumbed to his injuries. Miraculously, no officers were harmed during the incident, and the third hostage was safely secured.

The Wayne County Medical Examiner, Juanita Wilson, responded to the hospital as part of the ongoing and active investigation. Authorities continue to examine the details surrounding this intense hostage situation at the Speedway.
