Brussels, Berlin The best hangover breakfast? Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba recommends a double cheeseburger and a large Coke. In a Kiev McDonald’s branch this week, Kuleba spoke about his student days. Sitting opposite him was his American counterpart Antony Blinken, who had tried his hand at being a rock guitarist when he was younger and, after Kuleba’s hangover tips, assured him with a smile: “Nothing like that ever happened to me.”

Blinken’s visit to Kiev and friendly talk of fast food in front of cameras was intended to demonstrate the US’s ties to Ukraine. This is important to both sides right now. With their summer offensive, the Ukrainian armed forces have fallen short of the expectations of their Western partners.

The Ukrainians’ determination to reconquer the territory in the south and east of the country that was annexed by Russia in violation of international law remains strong. But disillusionment is growing – among the Ukrainian population and among supporters abroad.
