Sydney Restaurant Exposes Shocking Scheme to Avoid Paying Bill
A high-end Sydney restaurant, Pony Dining in The Rocks, has publicly shared disturbing CCTV footage revealing a calculated attempt by a group of diners to defraud the establishment. The incident, which unfolded recently, involved a family of six who refused to pay their bill after falsely claiming to have found a hair in their meal.
Pony Dining took to Instagram to share the footage, a move described as unusual for the restaurant. “We don’t usually share content like this,” the restaurant stated in a caption accompanying the video. According to the post, the family’s complaint of a hair in their food came after the meal had been served, and was used as a pretext to avoid payment.
The footage shows a man, wearing a white t-shirt, deliberately reaching into his armpit, extracting a hair, and then carefully placing it onto his plate. He repeats this process, seemingly to bolster the false claim. The act was captured clearly by the restaurant’s security cameras.
Beyond the attempted deception, Pony Dining reported experiencing “inappropriate and unacceptable behaviour” during their interaction with the group. The restaurant has formally reported the incident to police and shared the video to “raise awareness for fellow hospitality venues.”
Located in the historic Rocks district, overlooking Sydney Harbour, Pony Dining specializes in premium, dry-aged steaks and fresh seafood. A representative for the restaurant confirmed to The Nightly that the group had ordered extensively, including a large Tomahawk steak. “We tried to make them pay but he refused,” they said.
Initial attempts to resolve the situation with law enforcement were hampered by the lack of immediate evidence. “We called the police however at that time we didn’t have the footage so police advised it was a civil problem and nothing they can do at that stage,” the restaurant explained. The group ultimately paid for their drinks before leaving the premises.
The video has quickly gone viral, sparking outrage online. Commenters expressed disbelief at the brazen act, with one user writing, “WILD… and the girls licking plates wtf.” Another commenter, claiming to work in the industry, stated, “Yep!! We see it in our restaurant!! Customers are NOT always right nor nice… this is repulsive.”
Pony Dining acknowledged the unsettling nature of the footage, adding, “We understand this isn’t pleasant to watch. We appreciate the kind messages and support for our team. Hospitality can be tough, and we hope all venues feel empowered to protect their teams.”
The restaurant has since reported the incident again to police, who are now actively seeking the individuals involved. This case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by the hospitality industry and the lengths to which some individuals will go to avoid financial responsibility.
