The Holy See Press Office reported this Saturday that Pope Francis has entrusted Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, president of the Italian Episcopal Conference, with the task of leading a mission to help achieve peace in Ukraine.

“I can confirm that Pope Francis has entrusted Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna and President of the Italian Episcopal Conference, with the task of leading a mission, in agreement with the Secretary of State, to help ease tensions in the conflict in Ukraine, with the hope, never resigned by the Holy Father, that this can start paths of peace”, reported the director of the Press Office, Matteo Bruni.

It also indicated that “the terms of this mission and its modality are currently under study.”

Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Pope Francis has made several calls and searched for ways to end the conflict.

On April 30, on the return flight from his trip to Hungary, the Pontiff reiterated his intention to build paths of peace. “I am willing. I’m willing to do whatever needs to be done. In addition, there is now a mission underway, but it is not public yet, ”he indicated.

Likewise, on May 13, he received Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski in audience.

For his part, on May 17, the Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, called on the Council of Europe to “take action and establish a final and just peace in Ukraine, and in all other so-called ‘grey areas’. ‘” of the continent.
