Prime Minister Najib Mikati spoke to the Pope about the difficult socio-economic situation facing the people of Lebanon and the worsening of the country’s current situation due to economic stagnation.

Lebanese President Najib Mikati met Pope Francis at the Cathedral on Thursday, March 16, followed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of the Holy See, and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary of the Holy See’s Department of International Relations.

The meeting emphasized the need to strengthen and ensure peaceful coexistence, peace and stability among people of different religions as the Republic of Lebanon eagerly awaits the election of a new head of state.

Also, reports said the meeting underscored the inescapable importance of Christians in Lebanon and the rest of the Middle East and the problems they face.

The Pope presented Mikati with a bronze work entitled Social Love, depicting a child helping another child, as well as several volumes of papal documents, a copy of this year’s message for peace, and a document on human brotherhood.

Head of State Mikati was also pleased to present the Pope with a stone holy water memorial bearing the image of Mother Viakula.
