The 46 ports of general interest in the State moved 274 million tons during the first six months of the year, which represents a decrease of 3.9% compared to the same period in 2022, according to State Ports.

The good performance of dry bulk, which grew by 2.1%, to 47.26 million tons, was not enough to offset the decline in liquid bulk, which fell by 3.9%, and general merchandise, which fell another 5.8%.

Conventional general cargo in the port system increased by 0.4%, resisting above all due to the 34.3% increase in vehicles under the cargo regime, consolidating the position of ports such as Barcelona, ​​Vigo or Valencia in this type of traffic .

On the other hand, the traffic of general merchandise in containers contracted by 8.5%, which is mainly explained by the trend, worldwide, of the relocation of activities towards local logistics and the contraction in the demand for goods. due to the macroeconomic situation.

As for passenger traffic, it has already completed the recovery after the pandemic, even exceeding the record figures of 2019, when in the same period the figure was 4.7 million cruise passengers.

In the first half of 2023, the number of passengers who arrived at Spanish ports on board a cruise ship was 4.94 million, which represents an increase of 87.1% compared to the same period in 2022.

With regard to passengers on regular lines, the increase was 21.2%, up to 10.7 million, due to the start of Operation Paso del Estrecho.
