Formula 1 Announces Return to Portugal in 2027, Replacing Dutch Grand Prix
A new two-year deal will bring Formula 1 back to the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão, Portugal, in both 2027 and 2028, replacing the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on the racing calendar. The announcement signals a shift in the sport’s geographic footprint as it navigates a growing number of prospective host cities.
Portugal’s Return to the F1 Circuit
The 2.891-mile circuit, originally constructed in 2008, previously hosted Formula 1 races in 2020 and 2021. These events were added to the calendar as a response to travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, filling gaps created by logistical challenges. The renewed agreement, finalized with the Portuguese government, Turismo de Portugal, and promoter Parkalgar, Parques Tecnológicos e Desportivos, S.A., demonstrates the continued appeal of the Portimão circuit.
“I’m delighted to see Portimão return to the Formula 1 calendar and for the sport to continue to ignite the passion of our incredible Portuguese fanbase,” said F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. “The circuit delivers on-track excitement from the first corner to the chequered flag, and its energy lifts fans out of their seats. The interest and demand to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix is the highest that it has ever been.”
Shifting Landscape of the F1 Calendar
The decision to move away from Zandvoort comes as the Dutch Grand Prix reaches the end of its current contract in 2026, with no plans for renewal. Similarly, the Spanish Grand Prix at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is also slated to conclude its contract after the next season. This creates opportunities for new and returning venues to secure a place on the prestigious Formula 1 schedule.
Currently, the F1 calendar boasts 24 races, with the majority of existing circuit contracts extending into the 2030s. However, the sport is actively exploring expansion, with a street race planned for Madrid next year, taking the place of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix at Imola.
Rotational Races and Future Expansion
The Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps is also undergoing a change in its scheduling format. Beginning in 2027, Spa will move to a rotational contract, hosting races every other year through 2031. This adjustment is separate from the new deal with Portimão.
Looking ahead, Formula 1 is considering several potential additions to its calendar. A Thai Grand Prix is being discussed, potentially as early as 2028, and the sport continues to pursue its long-standing goal of hosting a race on the African continent. According to one analyst, the growing interest in hosting Formula 1 events reflects the sport’s increasing global popularity and economic impact.
