Corsica Concludes Paoli Tercentenary Celebrations with Week-Long Cultural Program

A series of events marking the 300th anniversary of the birth of Pascal Paoli, a pivotal figure in Corsican history, will draw to a close between December 6th and December 9th. The program features a diverse range of cultural and civic engagements, reflecting on Corsica’s complex past and future.

The celebrations culminate after a year of commemorations honoring Paoli, often referred to as the “Father of the Fatherland,” and his enduring legacy on the island. The final week promises a rich tapestry of experiences for residents and visitors alike.

Examining Corsica’s Identity: A Citizen Café

On Saturday, December 6th, at 10:30 a.m., the Animu venue will host a citizen café centered on the question of Corsica’s political status. The discussion, framed by the prompt “Roman province, Vatican land, Anglo-Corsican kingdom, independent state, French department, a process called autonomy, what status for Corsica?” aims to unpack the island’s multifaceted history and potential pathways forward.

A distinguished panel including François Santoni, Denis Jouffroy, Jean-Guy Talamoni, Gilles Guerrini, and Petr’Antò Tomasi will contribute to the conversation, offering insights into the evolution of Corsican institutions. The event is free and open to the public, encouraging broad participation in this critical dialogue.

Religious Observance and Festive Concerts

Monday, December 8th, will be marked by a traditional procession originating from the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, followed by a religious mass. As evening descends, the atmosphere will shift to one of celebration with musical performances.

The female group Suarina will perform at the Christmas market at 6 p.m., with the market itself receiving a blessing at 7:30 p.m. Later, at 8 p.m., the group Vadina will take the stage at Place Henri-Giraud, promising a vibrant conclusion to the day.

A Musical Retrospective: “À cantà Paoli”

The final event of the tercentenary celebrations will be held on Tuesday, December 9th, at the Red Room. The Balagna group, under the direction of Marc’Andria Castellani, will present “À cantà Paoli,” a concert dedicated to the life and times of Pascal Paoli.

Drawing inspiration from the show “Storia,” “À cantà Paoli” utilizes a series of songs interwoven with narration to trace the journey of the “Father of the Fatherland.” This performance offers a poignant and artistic reflection on Paoli’s enduring impact on Corsican identity and aspirations.

These concluding events represent a powerful moment of collective remembrance and forward-looking discussion, solidifying Pascal Paoli’s place in Corsican history and inspiring continued dialogue about the island’s future.
