July 16, 2023 at 12:06 p.m – Bringing You the Good News

Because the negative news often dominates NU.nl, the positive news sometimes snows under. That is why we list cheerful messages. With a lot of good news this week: from the end of AIDS to the complete recovery of seal Netty.

UN: AIDS can be eradicated by 2030

Ending AIDS by 2030 is possible if countries invest in prevention and treatment. This is the conclusion of UNAIDS, the AIDS program of the United Nations, in a report on Thursday.

The AIDS program is seeing good results in East and South Africa. “Progress is strongest in the countries and regions with the most financial investment,” the organization writes in the report. These measures have reduced the number of new HIV infections in East and South Africa by 57 percent since 2010.

East and South Africa prove that it is possible, but there is still (more) work to be done in other places in the world. For example, the number of infections in Eastern Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East and North Africa is increasing. According to UNAIDS, an estimated 39 million people worldwide had HIV by 2022. HIV can develop into AIDS if left untreated.

In many countries, people living with HIV or AIDS face stigma, discrimination and violence. That won’t help stop it. Ending AIDS is a political and financial choice.

‘Free money’ for three hundred Amsterdam families on welfare

Three hundred Amsterdam families on social assistance will receive an extra 150 euros per month from next year. It’s a gift, so they don’t have to pay taxes on it and they don’t have their allowances reduced.

It is an experiment that is based on a “positive view of humanity”, writes the municipality of Amsterdam. Researchers from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences follow the families on welfare to see whether the “free money” influences their well-being, health, and development.

The experiment will last two years. In addition to Amsterdam, the municipality of Tilburg and Zaanstad are also getting started.

The number of Lyme disease diagnoses did not increase for the first time

The number of Lyme disease diagnoses has not increased for the first time. In 2021 there were about as many Lyme diagnoses as in 2017.

The RIVM concludes this on the basis of a survey among general practitioners. Since 1994, the institute has been counting the number of diagnoses made by general practitioners every four or five years.

What is Lyme Disease?

Lyme disease is caused by a bacteria carried by an infected tick. A red ring or spot at the site of the bite may indicate Lyme.

Every year, approximately one and a half million tick bites occur. In 2 to 3 percent this results in Lyme complaints, such as fever or muscle and joint pain.

The RIVM does immediately make a comment: corona may have influenced the figures because fewer people went to the GP as a result.

Even more news to make you happy

And there was even more good news this week. Among other things, these messages, with big or small news, gave us a smile at the editor:

– An extremely long-loaned book has been returned to the library after 119 years in the United States. The book was discovered by a curator at West Virginia University Libraries among recent donations. The curator recognized the book as part of the book collection of a local library in Massachusetts. The book was loaned out in 1904 and never returned until now.

– VanMoof owners can still unlock their bikes, even if the Amsterdam bicycle brand VanMoof goes bankrupt. Belgian e-bike competitor Cowboy developed the Bikey app for this purpose. – The fire department had three people last Sunday rescued from a drifting car. It concerns an adult and two children in Oldenzaal in Overijssel. The car started to drift because the road was flooded by heavy showers.
