A nationwide call to prayer seeking rain will take place in the United Arab Emirates on Friday, October 17, following directives from President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The General Authority for Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat has confirmed that the rain prayer, known as Salat al-Istisqa, will be performed in all mosques across the country, commencing half an hour before Friday prayers. This initiative, rooted in the Sunnah – the teachings and practices – of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, aims to beseech divine intervention for much-needed rainfall.
Presidential Guidance and Religious Observance
The decision to hold the prayer stems directly from the guidance of President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is widely revered for his commitment to both the welfare of his people and the preservation of Islamic traditions. A senior official stated that the President’s directive reflects “a deep sense of mercy for his servants and creatures,” and a desire to seek God’s blessings for the nation.
The prayer will be conducted in close coordination with key religious bodies, including the Emirates Council for Sharia Fatwa, the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities in Dubai, and the Department of Islamic Affairs in Sharjah, ensuring a unified and religiously sound observance.
Preparing for Collective Supplication
Dr. Omar Habtoor Al-Darai, Chairman of the General Authority for Islamic Affairs, Endowments and Zakat, emphasized the comprehensive preparations underway. “A circular has been issued to all officials and imams to ensure mosques are prepared to receive worshipers and provide an environment conducive to reverence and tranquility,” he confirmed. The Authority is encouraging full participation from all members of society, framing the prayer as an opportunity to seek divine favor and contribute to the nation’s prosperity.
The hope is that the collective supplication will lead to the descent of “blessed rain,” fostering “goodness and development” throughout the UAE.
Understanding the Rain Prayer
The Emirates Council for Sharia Fatwa has clarified the proper procedure for performing Salat al-Istisqa. The prayer consists of two rak’ahs (cycles) followed by a sermon delivered without a pulpit.
To enhance understanding and facilitate participation, the Council has launched a series of educational initiatives. These include:
- A video clip explaining the prayer and its rulings.
- A collection of jurisprudential and fatwa publications detailing the supplications associated with the rain prayer.
- A comprehensive publication on the prayer for rain, available in both Arabic and English, accessible via the Council’s smart application and website: https://fatwauae.gov.ae/ar/publications/Prayer-for-Rain.
This nationwide observance underscores the UAE’s deep-rooted Islamic faith and its commitment to seeking divine guidance in times of need, while simultaneously reviving cherished Prophetic Sunnahs.
