Escalating Temperatures and Public safety concerns

The heat will build throughout the weekend, beginning with a high of 39°C (102°F) on Friday,August 8. overnight temperatures will remain elevated, not falling below 19°C (66°F) and possibly exceeding 22°C (72°F) in the coming days. “This episode of hot weather mobilizes state and communities services in order to cope and protect the population, animals and the environment,” a senior official stated. The prefecture is emphasizing preventative measures to mitigate the risks of drowning and wildfires, and is encouraging the public to adjust their behaviour accordingly.

Drowning Risks Rise with Temperatures

Authorities are notably concerned about the increased risk of drowning as residents seek relief from the heat in waterways. The prefecture warns of the dangers of hydrocution – thermal shock – and stresses the importance of constant adult supervision of children, choosing monitored swimming areas, and being mindful of one’s physical condition.

Wildfire Threat: Human Activity a Major Factor

The risk of wildfires is also a significant concern. According to the prefecture, nine out of ten fires are caused by human activity. A discarded cigarette butt, a spark from machinery, or even a poorly extinguished barbecue can quickly ignite dry vegetation, potentially devastating large areas and endangering lives and property.

Precautions for Residents and Travelers

Specific guidance has been issued for various activities. Smokers are urged to dispose of cigarette butts responsibly in ashtrays and refrain from smoking in forested areas. Barbecues should be conducted at home or in designated, furnished spaces, away from flammable vegetation. Individuals engaged in DIY projects are advised to work in safe areas, protect against sparks, and have a fire extinguisher readily available. Residents are also encouraged to clear their gardens of dry brush and store wood and gas cylinders securely.

For those traveling, authorities recommend carrying ample water, using a misting fan, equipping vehicles with sun visors or solar films, and ensuring vehicles are in good working order to prevent overheating. “As much as possible, shift your trip outside the hottest hours (especially between 12 p.m. and 16 a.m.) and avoid peak hours,” the prefecture specified.

Support for Vulnerable populations and Animals

Local authorities are reinforcing support systems for vulnerable individuals, including the homeless. Reception centers are being staffed during peak heat hours to distribute water bottles, and individuals in need are encouraged to contact 115 for assistance. Municipalities are also proactively contacting residents registered on local vulnerability lists.

The prefecture of Haute-Garonne also issued guidance for animal welfare, emphasizing
