Cologne One opulently decorated Gründerzeit old building follows the next. The city center and shops are just around the corner – and the biggest highlight: After a ten-minute walk you can see the open North Sea from the harbor promenade. What sounds like a priceless location was still considered one of the poorest districts in Germany just a few years ago: the Goethe district in Bremerhaven.

After the large shipyards closed their doors in the 1980s and the fishing industry was also unable to get out of the crisis, the economy in Bremerhaven collapsed. Unemployment, poverty and vacancies followed. As recently as 2013, a survey ranked it among the ten most unattractive cities in Germany. The city is still struggling with the effects of the economic downturn. As a holiday destination, even for a spoiled clientele, the city hardly seems attractive.
