Presentation of the final report of the leadership and political engagement of women in Gabon project

January 31, 2024

The non-governmental organization called Malachie, through its president, Pépécy Ogouliguende, presented the results of the project “leadership and political engagement of women in Gabon”. This presentation was made in the presence of the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations, Head of Unoca, Abdou Barry. It was this Wednesday, January 31, 2024 in Libreville.

They don’t give up. They are committed to it and are determined. Women leaders want more places of choice under the political sun in Gabon. This is why the NGO Malachie works, organizes training and information seminars to invite women to take an interest in it. This non-governmental organization has also officially submitted a report to a UN institution accredited in Gabon. “The main objective was to officially submit the report to the Head of the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa (Unoca) and present the results of the project”leadership and political commitment of women in Gabon supported and implemented in August 2023 by the NGO Malachie with financial support from Unoca” explains Pépécy Ogouliguende, President of the NGO Malachie.

During this meeting with the UN diplomat, it was also a question of formulating recommendations for the next steps; to contribute to increasing the representation of women in politics and in decision-making spheres.

Speaking following the presentation of the results of the Project, HE the Special Representative welcomed the work carried out by the NGOs benefiting from UNOCA funding, including the NGO Malachie. He then invited Women Leaders to intensify advocacy for the inclusion of women in decision-making bodies in this special period known as restoration. “ We as Unoca our mandate is to strengthen the quotas of women and young people in decision-making bodies, we are at your side. »

In Gabon, although there has been much progress in terms of women’s rights, their participation in politics still remains low. Indeed, despite the progress observed, gaps remain.

The promulgation of Law No. 009/2016 setting the quotas for access of women and young people to elections and senior state jobs did not make it possible to reverse the curve of women’s participation in political elections. It is in this context that the NGO Malachie, with the support of the United Nations Regional Office for Central Africa (Unoca) organized workshops to strengthen the capacities of women in leadership and political engagement in Libreville on 09 and August 10, 2023 and in Port-Gentil, August 18 and 19, 2023.

The aim was to remedy the lack of information and training for candidates invested by their political structures: by strengthening their capacities in terms of leadership, by informing them, raising their awareness and training them in the issues and challenges of a process. successful election, how to anticipate the risks linked to electoral violence.

The workshops mainly aimed to:

Strengthen the skills of women candidates and potential candidates in transformational leadership; Improve public speaking and persuasive communication skills; Develop effective strategies for managing an electoral campaign; Promote the design of policies centered on the needs of the Community; Facilitate networking and sharing of experiences between women candidates and/or potential candidates.

Women were invited to prepare to take an active part in the future National Dialogue and to integrate all the organs of the organization of said dialogue.
