The Greek government had cultivated high expectations for the block in Albania’s negotiations for its accession to the EU.

But while most in Greece talk of a deadlock, in reality at this stage Athens has chosen to allow the process to proceed.

Greece does have the potential to block the next phase of Albania’s accession process, which needs unanimity – like every step.

But the pressures are intense. As was evident from Chancellor Soltz’s statements, most Europeans do not take kindly to Greece’s objections to the Beleri case, which they consider a bilateral issue. Something that Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama repeated with too much air.
