Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia Zoran Zaev on Sunday evening, October 31, announced his intention to resign. On this day, in a number of cities in the country, the second round of mayoral elections took place, in which the ruling party was defeated.

“I take responsibility for the current development of the situation, – said Zaev, speaking to reporters. – I am leaving the post of prime minister and party chairman (Social Democratic Union of Macedonia. Ed.)”.

Particularly painful for Zaev’s party, the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia, which heads the ruling coalition “We Can” in the Republic of North Macedonia, was the defeat of the mayor of the capital, Skopje. In this city, opposition candidate Danela Arsovska won with 55.85% of the vote, according to the election results available on the evening of October 31. The candidate from Zayev’s party – Petre Silegov – after counting about 60% of the ballots receives support from only 40.60% of voters.
Zoran Zaev has served as head of government of the Republic of North Macedonia since August 30, 2020.
