Přísaha Candidate Demanded Payment For ANO Endorsement

An unsuccessful Senate candidate on the Znojmo district ballot requested 50,000 crowns from an ANO contender in exchange for a campaign endorsement, according to reporting published on October 16, 2026. The candidate rejected the financial demand, leading the minor-party politician to endorse the incumbent from TOP 09 instead.

Financial Demands and Rejected Endorsements in Znojmo

The Senate runoff on the Znojmo district ballot saw unexpected friction over campaign endorsements when a defeated fringe candidate conditioned his public support on a cash payment. Pavel Černý, representing the Přísaha party, finished last among six contenders in the first round of voting with 5.04 percent of the ballots cast, according to coverage detailing the exchange. Before the final weekend showdown, Černý approached representatives of the ANO movement with an offer to back their runoff contender, swimming coach Jiří Kyněra.

Communication reviewed by reporters revealed that Černý told local ANO representatives he would throw his support behind Kyněra under the condition that he received a motivating financial compensation package alongside his bank account details. Stanislav Palša, who led the Znojmo ANO municipal campaign, acknowledged receiving the proposal and stated he would discuss it with Kyněra. Kyněra ultimately turned down the offer, maintaining that political endorsements should stem from shared principles and mutual regard rather than cash transactions.

Černý defended his monetary demand by explaining that the arrangement would require multi-day labor involving the creation and editing of video content in his capacity as an influencer. He noted that he expected remuneration for undertaking that work. After the arrangement fell through, Černý publicly threw his support behind the incumbent candidate, Tomáš Třetina. Both men stated that no money changed hands for that endorsement, with Černý asserting he favored Třetina from the beginning due to his prior experience in the upper legislative chamber.

How the Contenders Reached the Senate Runoff

The electoral contest for Senate seat No. 54 pits incumbent lawmaker Tomáš Třetina against challenger Jiří Kyněra following an initial round that drew an increased turnout of 45.07 percent of eligible voters. Třetina, running with backing from TOP 09, KDU-ČSL, ODS, STAN, and the Pirate Party, secured 35.55 percent of the vote in the first round, translating to 14,328 ballots. Kyněra advanced to the second stage with 22.28 percent, capturing 8,980 votes.

The broader field of six candidates in the Znojmo district included Bohumila Beranová representing Hlas regionů, Jindřich Růžička running for NEZ, and Petra Rédová Fajmonová representing Stačilo!. Voter participation in the district’s first round exceeded the figures from the 2020 Senate elections by approximately 15 percent, a development Třetina called a major victory for local civic engagement.

Broader Political Landscape in the 2026 Senate Races

Across the Czech Republic, voters head to the polls on October 16 and October 17, 2026, to decide 22 Senate runoffs. While individual constituency battles draw intense local scrutiny—including high-profile matchups in Prague, Plzeň, and Ostrava—analysts note that the parliamentary opposition is guaranteed to retain its majority in the upper chamber regardless of the final weekend outcomes. Bookmakers and commentators are closely watching whether traditional clubs like ODS and TOP 09 can maintain their dominant position against emerging regional political formations.
