The latest live-action Street Fighter film arrived in North American cinemas following an extensive development history that saw franchise movie rights revert to Legendary Pictures in 2023. The film, which runs 120 minutes, is a production by Legendary Pictures and Capcom, distributed by Paramount Pictures.
Kitao Sakurai’s Directorial Vision
Born in Japan and raised in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, filmmaker Kitao Sakurai brought experience from his work on the prank-comedy “Bad Trip.” Sakurai was brought on to helm the project. Sakurai noted that he wanted a subversive take on the material, avoiding the common tendency in video game adaptations to soften bizarre elements. He leaned heavily into the high-energy, heightened reality of anime, drawing on his personal connection to Japanese roots and media like “Akira” and Ghost in the Shell.
The narrative draws inspiration primarily from the game Street Fighter II. To capture the franchise’s history, the production team incorporated various elements, including anime-style sequences. Sakurai corrected the record regarding the film’s product placement, confirming that the production utilized Jolt cola rather than Mountain Dew. The film’s soundtrack features 1990s hits.
An Ensemble of Fighters and Comedians
The cast features Noah Centineo as Ken Masters and Andrew Koji as Ryu, alongside Callina Liang, Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i, David Dastmalchian, Cody Rhodes, Eric André, Andrew Schulz, Vidyut Jammwal, and 50 Cent. Dastmalchian portrays M. Bison, a role he approached as a tribute to the late Raul Julia’s 1994 performance. Eric André’s involvement as a recurring collaborator of the director influenced the film’s comedic tone. Andrew Schulz provides comedic relief as Dan Hibiki, appearing alongside Cody Rhodes’ Guile. The cast also includes Hirooki Goto, a Japanese puroresu star, cast as the sumo wrestler E. Honda.

Regarding the chemistry on set, 50 Cent, who plays Balrog, noted that the cast underwent rigorous training and rehearsals before filming began. The actors spent significant time together, which helped solidify their bond. As 50 Cent described, the process required everyone to put in the work before stepping in front of the camera.
Critical Reception and Box Office Context
The film’s critical reception has been mixed, currently holding a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Industry reporting highlights that while the film is a departure from conventional video game movies, it benefits from the commitment of its ensemble cast. Despite the critical response, the film’s release coincides with a mid-fall break where reports indicate 21% of K-12 schools and 7% of colleges are off, which analysts hope will drive theater traffic.

Other titles like Sense & Sensibility
and “Whalefall” also held previews estimated at $1 million each. While the box office landscape is competitive, Sakurai has stated that the film is designed to leave room for the franchise to continue, as it covers the beginning of the story rather than a definitive conclusion.
As the film continues its theatrical run, the focus remains on whether the deranged live-action cartoon
approach will satisfy fans of the nearly 40-year-old franchise. Sakurai has encouraged viewers to experience the film in groups, noting, If you’re a fan of the game or of ’90s movies, go to the theater with your friends and watch it as a group because that’s kind of how it works best.
