Lean – conscious
The Venezuelan government and the opposition announced progress towards resolving their differences during the third round of talks in Mexico City that ended yesterday, Monday.
A statement read by Norwegian mediator Dag Nylander said, “The positions of both sides have come together to find solutions to the challenges of social, economic and political issues.”
The parties involved did not detail the areas where progress has been made within the framework of the negotiations aimed at finding a solution to the political crisis that has characterized the eight-year term of President Nicolas Maduro.
The statement showed progress in the efforts to establish a mechanism for consultation with “political and social players at the national and international level” to support the negotiations in which Norway is a mediator.
Caracas is demanding that Western sanctions be eased, while the opposition led by Juan Guaido demands that fair regional elections be held in November.
Neither Maduro, whom the opposition accuses of rigging the elections in which he won again in 2018, nor Guaido, who is considered by around 60 countries to be the president of Venezuela, personally involved in the talks.
Venezuela is experiencing an unprecedented political and economic crisis that has prompted millions to leave the country.
During a round of talks held in Mexico City earlier this month, the two sides reached common ground on the response to the epidemic and pledged to continue searching for ways out of the political crisis.
