The Venezuelan government and the opposition announced progress toward resolving their differences during the third round of talks in Mexico City that concluded yesterday, Monday.

A statement read by Norwegian mediator Dag Nylander said, “The positions of the two sides have converged in search of solutions to the challenges related to social, economic and political issues.”

The parties concerned did not go into details about the areas in which progress has been achieved within the framework of negotiations aimed at resolving the political crisis that has characterized the eight-year term of President Nicolas Maduro.

The statement indicated progress in efforts to establish a mechanism for consultation with “political and social players at the national and international levels” to support the negotiations in which Norway plays the role of mediator.

Caracas is demanding the easing of Western sanctions, while the opposition led by Juan Guaido calls for ensuring the organization of fair regional elections in November.

Neither Maduro, whom the opposition accuses of rigging the elections in which he won again in 2018, nor Guaido, who is considered by about 60 countries to be the president of Venezuela, are personally participating in the talks.

Venezuela is experiencing an unprecedented political and economic crisis that has prompted millions to leave the country.

During a round of talks held in Mexico City earlier this month, the two sides reached common ground regarding the response to the epidemic and pledged to continue searching for ways out of the political crisis.
