Amid the expectation generated by the Tourist Showcase of the Colombian Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (Anato), a significant challenge is anticipated for the tourism sector in Colombia: a decrease in hotel occupancy during the first quarter of 2024, according to the projections of the Colombian Tourist Hotel Association, Cotelco.

José Duarte García, president of Cotelco, revealed that hotel occupancy levels are expected to fall more than two percentage points compared to 2023. The previous year’s numbers stood at 59.95% between January and March, while the Projections for the same period in 2024 indicate 57.70%.

The president of Cotelco identified several factors that contribute to this decrease, including the increase in VAT on hotels and air tickets, the situation of the air market, land connectivity problems and security concerns. The contraction in Colombian household consumption also continues to be a relevant concern.

Duarte emphasized the persistence of high levels of informality in various accommodation options, which requires urgent intervention at both the local and national levels by the Government. The need to address these issues becomes crucial to maintain the vitality of the tourism industry in the country.

Despite this challenging outlook, some hotel chains remain cautiously optimistic. Miguel Diez, president of Hoteles Estelar, projects a growth of close to 2.7% in occupancy and a 15% increase in sales by 2024. He highlighted the importance of offering sustainable experiences, committing to reducing the carbon footprint, implementing technologies for efficiency in the use of resources and reducing solid waste.

Jorge Giannattasio, senior vice president and chief operating officer for the Caribbean and Latin America at Hilton, shared the company’s optimistic outlook, highlighting its strong growth in 2023 and the expansion of Hilton’s presence in Colombia.

Despite the challenges, hospitality leaders expressed confidence that recovery could be on the horizon. However, they remain alert to the economic and structural challenges that could affect hotel occupancy in the country during this year.
