Sunday November 19, a cultural day, as part of the second edition Adlam Pulaaku international, was held at the Kipé Youth Center, Ratoma commune. It brought together eleven sub-regional delegations and one from Europe (France). The objective is to promote Adlam, promote the popular.

Aysha Sow, the president of Sukaabhé Adlam Winderé or Jeunesse Adlam international, declares that the competition aims to raise awareness among young people of the importance of teaching in national languages through our writing systems: Adlam, N’Ko. “We want to show the government that the Adlam character will play its part in the literacy program for two million Guineans by the end of 2030. In Guinea there are books on mathematics, politics, religion published in Adlam. Recently, Microsoft gave us a ton of books for children to read, write and count in poular through Adlam. »
Momo Damba, the national director of literacy, non-formal education and the promotion of national languages, believes that Adlam will better enable young people to master the Pular language. “In Europe, each country promotes its languages. In Guinea, we don’t do it. Some people are even embarrassed to express themselves in their mother tongues. » According to him, Adlam is already codified in the Guinean writing system, there remains its popularization and its teaching in schools. “We are currently testing the Elan project (Schools and national languages in Africa). We started with the harmonized character. After the expansion, we will think about teaching our local characters to toddlers. »
Radiate culture
Karim Samoura, secretary general of the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development, spokesperson for Minister Safiatou Baldé, the guest of honor: “We had studied the French alphabet. From now on, Adlam will allow us to translate our languages. This is a big step towards promoting our languages and culture. It is a major contribution to social development, the basis of the economic development of our country. We never manage to express in French what we think in Pular. There are intonations that are specific to Pular that cannot be translated into French. » Mr. Samoura adds that the possibility of having the alphabet of our own languages will allow us to better communicate and translate thoughts and emotions. And that popularizing a local alphabet will promote the rapprochement of peoples and the influence of culture.
Adlam is an alphabetical writing system of 28 letters (5 vowels). It is written from right to left. It was created in 1989 in N’Zérékoré by brothers Ibrahima and Abdoulaye Barry. “Adlam trains children, young people, adults, women, from N’Zérékoré to Koundara and from Conakry to Siguiri. In 33 years of popularization around the world, we have trained 1,040,837 men and women in the use of the Adlam alphabet,” concludes Jeunesse Adlam international.
