The Center for Youth and Family (CJG) Rijnmond organizes vaccination days in the entire Rotterdam-Rijnmond region from Tuesday 11 October to Thursday 1 December. Children and young people can then get a free shot against serious infectious diseases such as measles, polio and the human papilloma virus. More than 58,000 children and young people from our region receive an invitation from the RIVM.

DTP and MMR vaccination: shot against the most common infectious diseases at a young age
All children born in 2013 who have not yet had their DTP and/or MMR vaccination can still get the shot against diphtheria, tetanus, polio (DTP) and mumps, measles and rubella (MMR). These vaccinations are the latest in a series that started at a baby age. The children received the earlier injections during the visits to the consultation office, which is part of the CJG.

HPV vaccination: shot against six types of cancer
From this year, boys and girls can be vaccinated against the human papilloma virus (HPV). An HPV infection can cause cancer of the mouth and pharynx, penis, anus, vagina, labia and cervix. Infection can occur through intercourse with someone who has HPV, but the virus also spreads through hands, skin, and mouth. Because the vaccine works best before someone comes into contact with the virus, the vaccination age is reduced from 13 to 10 years. Boys and girls who are older but have not been invited before will also have the opportunity to protect themselves against HPV. RIVM sends an invitation to girls from 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2012 and boys from 2004, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2012. Young people born in 2005, 2007 and 2013 will receive an invitation in 2023.

Two shots are needed to get sufficient protection. Also young people older than 15 years only need two shots when there is at least 5 months between the two shots. If this is not the case, young people older than 15 years need three injections. Because the vaccine does not protect against all types of cancer, it remains important that the girls are checked later, for example by taking a smear from the population screening.

MenACWY vaccination: vaccination against meningococcal disease
In the autumn of 2022, no more young people will be invited for the MenACWY vaccination. In the spring of 2023, all young people born in 2009 will receive an invitation for the vaccination against meningococcal disease types A, C, W, Y. The young people born in 2008 who have not yet had the MenACWY vaccination will receive an invitation in the spring of 2023.
