Canberra: Protests against China’s new ambassador to Australia Xiao Qian. Qian’s speech was interrupted by protesters at an event at the Australia – China Relations Institute at the University of Technology in Sydney.
Protests against Qian, who was appointed in January, came as he was talking about the future of Sino-Australian relations. Protesters criticized China for not giving independence to Tibet and Hong Kong and for human rights abuses against Uyghurs.
He also called on university officials to invite a representative of the “genocidal dictatorship”, saying the disruption of the event was a violation of “freedom of expression” and was “unacceptable.”
