Krafton Launches ‘PUBG: Blindspot’ into Early Access with Free-to-Play Model

A new tactical shooter from the creators of PUBG is entering early access on Steam, offering a unique blend of top-down perspective and realistic military action – and it’s available to play for free.

Krafton announced on Thursday that ‘PUBG: Blindspot,’ developed by PUBG Studio, will be accessible via Steam’s early access program starting at 2 p.m. Eastern Time on February 5th. The game distinguishes itself with a free-to-play model, aiming to broaden its player base and foster collaborative development.

A New Tactical Experience

‘PUBG: Blindspot’ is a 5v5 team-based shooter viewed from a top-down perspective. This unconventional viewpoint doesn’t sacrifice intensity; instead, it delivers a unique tactical experience centered around indoor combat. The developers have focused on creating a realistic and fast-paced shooting system, aiming to replicate the immersive and strategic gameplay found in first-person shooting (FPS) games.

The game’s design emphasizes tactical depth, offering a level of control and responsiveness not typically seen in top-down shooters. This approach, according to a company release, is intended to provide players with a more engaging and competitive experience.

Improvements from Demo to Early Access

The early access version represents a significant leap forward from previous demo versions. Developers have substantially improved both the user interface (UI) and the overall artwork quality. Beyond visual enhancements, the control system has been refined, and the game balance has been adjusted to strengthen the overall tactical experience.

Collaborative Development with the Community

The decision to launch in early access is a deliberate strategy to involve players directly in the development process. “Early access is a service method adopted so that more gamers can directly participate in the development process,” stated the game’s project director, Seungmyeong Yang. “We want to communicate closely with users through free-to-play-based open development and complete Blindspot together.”

Players are encouraged to provide feedback through the official Discord community, where the development team will share updates and outline future development plans. Interested gamers can also add the game to their Steam wishlist and follow the official Steam page to receive notifications about availability and major updates.

Krafton’s move to embrace a free-to-play model and community-driven development signals a shift in strategy, potentially broadening the appeal of the PUBG universe beyond its established battle royale format. The success of ‘PUBG: Blindspot’ will likely hinge on its ability to deliver a compelling and balanced tactical experience that resonates with both existing PUBG fans and newcomers to the genre.
