Ordinance seeks to facilitate women’s access to the device, especially those in more vulnerable situations

The Government of the Federal District (GDF) authorized the insertion of the intrauterine device (IUD) by nursing professionals from the Health Department (SES-DF). This is what establishes the Ordinance No. 422published no Official Gazette of the Federal District (DODF). The main objective of the measure is to facilitate women’s access to contraceptive methods, especially those in more vulnerable situations. In 2021 and 2022, more than 11 thousand devices were placed.

The Primary Care coordinator, Fabiana Fonseca, highlights that the authorization contributes to the improvement of health indicators, the reduction of maternal and infant mortality, the prevention of unplanned pregnancies and the mitigation of induced abortions. “In addition, the measure gives autonomy to these people and combats domestic violence, providing greater access to an effective reproductive system.”

The IUD is offered as part of the family planning options made available by SES-DF, in basic health units (UBSs). Patients undergo obstetric and gynecological evaluation to determine the suitability of the device or to suggest other methods, such as oral contraceptives or condoms. In addition, they must sign an Informed Consent Form (TCLE) before insertion.

Training

In June 2023, the Ministry of Health issued a technical note recommending that nurses and doctors insert the device, as long as they are trained.

The protocol published in the DODF this week was developed by qualified professionals and is compatible with nursing activities, following the trend of other Brazilian states and countries that allow nurses to insert the IUD. Both nurses and family and community doctors will be properly trained to perform the procedure.

“Since July 2023, the Brazilian Nursing Association has been offering training, with the support of SES-DF. Inspection will be carried out through evaluations and research to monitor health indicators”, adds the coordinator.

With 15 years of experience in Family Health and specialization in Women’s Health, nurse Sheylla Ferreira highlights the improvement in access to the promotion of the contraceptive method. “This has helped people with uteruses protect themselves against unwanted pregnancy,” says the professional, who conducts training in health units to teach nurses how to insert the device.
