Quebec ERs: Avoid Due to Flu & Respiratory Viruses

Quebec Hospitals Overwhelmed as Respiratory Virus “Maelstrom” Grips Province

Quebecers are being strongly advised to avoid non-essential visits to emergency rooms as hospitals face unprecedented strain from a surge in respiratory illnesses. A confluence of influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is pushing the province’s healthcare system to its breaking point, according to medical professionals.

Emergency Rooms “Bursting at the Seams”

A doctor at the McGill University Health Centre described the situation as a “maelstrom,” stating that emergency rooms are “bursting at the seams.” The primary driver of the crisis is a rapidly escalating flu outbreak, with the epidemiological curve described as “downright scary” and “almost vertical” as of Tuesday, December 23, 2025. The influx of patients is exacerbating existing pressures, as emergency departments were already operating at full capacity before the onset of flu season.

“Patients are on stretchers in the hallways, waiting for beds on the wards that are themselves filled by people who are sick,” one physician explained. “So it’s not a pretty picture.” The situation is further complicated by higher-than-usual staffing shortages due to scheduled vacations.

Hospital Occupancy Reaches Critical Levels

Data released Tuesday afternoon revealed a dire situation across the province. Fifteen hospitals in the Montreal region were operating above 100% occupancy, with two exceeding 200%. The Monteregie region reported eight hospitals over capacity, and several hospitals in the Bas-St-Laurent, Chaudiere-Appalaches, and Laurentians regions were also operating far beyond their normal limits.

Public Health Guidance and Preventative Measures

Provincial health authorities are urging individuals experiencing illness to contact the 811 health hotline for medical advice before seeking care at an emergency room. Information regarding at-home treatment options is also available on the province’s official website.

Medical experts emphasize the importance of preventative measures, including vaccination against both influenza and COVID-19. Frequent handwashing and the use of masks when experiencing illness are also recommended. While most individuals can recover at home, prompt medical attention is crucial for those exhibiting severe symptoms such as difficulty breathing, a prolonged high fever, confusion, or dehydration.

Rising Concerns Over Measles Outbreak

Adding to the public health concerns, a measles outbreak in Quebec has grown to nine confirmed cases as of Tuesday. A previous outbreak occurred between December 2024 and mid-April. This resurgence is particularly alarming given that Canada recently lost its measles elimination status.

One infectious disease specialist stressed the need for robust public health messaging nationwide and a significant increase in vaccination rates. “Unfortunately, over the last year, we’ve shown that if anything, we’re heading in the other direction,” the specialist noted, highlighting a concerning trend of declining vaccine uptake.
