France Issues Orange Alerts as Heavy Rainfall Sweeps Across Multiple Departments

A significant weather disturbance is bringing substantial rainfall to France, prompting Météo-France to issue orange “rain-flood” alerts for several departments. The alerts, initially in place for Gironde, Dordogne, and Corrèze, have been extended to include Ain, Isère, Savoie, and Haute-Savoie as of Monday, November 24th.

According to a bulletin released by Météo-France, “a disturbance gives abundant precipitation from the South-West to the eastern flank of the country.” Since Sunday evening, rainfall totals have ranged from 30 to 50 millimeters across the west of the Massif Central and into the Gironde department, with Bordeaux experiencing up to 59 millimeters. The northern Alps and the southern Jura massif have also seen significant precipitation, with the Chartreuse massif receiving between 80 and 100 millimeters.

Residents in Gironde, Dordogne, and Corrèze can anticipate an improvement in conditions throughout the day, though the risk of localized, stormy rainfall remains, particularly in Gironde this evening. Météo-France details that the rain will become more intermittent in the afternoon. However, the situation is expected to persist in the Alpine departments, with continued rainfall throughout the day before diminishing overnight.

Forecasters predict an additional 30 to 50 millimeters of rain over the next 12 hours across the Jura and Alps massifs, with some areas potentially receiving up to 70 millimeters locally. This continued precipitation raises concerns about potential flooding and disruptions to travel.
