University of Hawai’i Sailing Team Secures Eighth Place at Rose Bowl Regatta

A strong finish to the competition propelled the University of Hawai’i coed sailing team to an eighth-place result at the Rose Bowl Regatta, held January 3-4 in Long Beach, California. The ‘Bows demonstrated meaningful enhancement from their 12th-place finish in the same event in 2023.

Remarkable Climb in Competitive Field

The university of Hawai’i team navigated a challenging field of 24 teams, ultimately securing a position in the top third. A total of 12 races were completed over the weekend, divided equally between the A and B divisions. Despite maintaining a mid-table position for much of the regatta, a surge of strong performances in the final races proved decisive.the team accumulated 106 points, narrowly outpacing ninth place by just three points.

A Division and B Division Performances

Erik Anderson and Amanda Turner represented the ‘Bows in the A division, amassing 55 points. Their performance included four top-ten finishes, culminating in a fourth-place finish in the final race. In the B division, Everett McAvoy and Stella Taherian showcased their skill, achieving a total of 51 points – slightly ahead of their A division counterparts. McAvoy and Taherian found their rhythm in the last two races, securing second and fourth-place finishes, respectively.

Brown University dominated the competition, claiming first place with a regatta-low score of 42 points.
