He was one of the legends of the Dakar rally, which will launch its 46th edition this Friday in Saudi Arabia. This Wednesday, racing driver René Metge, three-time winner of the event, died at the age of 82, as announced France Blue. After his successes in 1981, 1984 and 1986, the native of Montrouge became the race director in 1987 and 1988. He was also Johnny Hallyday’s co-driver when the rocker took part in the event in 2002.

A rally-raid specialist, René Metge has also shone in other events. He notably participated six times in the 24 hours of Le Mans. His best result was a fifth place in 1982, while driving a Porsche. His last success dates back to 1987, when he won the Porsche 944 Turbo Cup trophy.

Faithful to Hauts-de-Seine, where he was born, the Ile-de-France resident was notably a friend of Coluche. He was also her brother-in-law for a time, having married Danièle, the comedian’s sister. Ultra-passionate about automobiles, which he discovered in his early years behind the wheel of his father’s Bugatti, he was also the owner of a dealership in Montrouge. The French automobile industry is therefore losing one of its pioneers at the start of 2024.
