Son of Senate Candidate Arrested Amidst Investigation into Fugitive Ex-Intelligence Chief

A probe into the alleged escape of former Brazilian intelligence chief Alexandre Ramagem to the United States has led to the arrest of Celso Rodrigo de Mello, son of Rodrigo Cataratas, a pre-candidate for the Senate representing the state of Roraima. The arrest, carried out by the Federal Police on Saturday, November 18, 2023, in Manaus, was ordered by Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), and is currently being conducted under a veil of secrecy.

Ramagem’s Flight and Alleged Crimes

Ramagem was sentenced to 16 years, one month, and 15 days in prison by the Supreme Court for his role in an attempted coup d’état. He is currently considered a fugitive from justice. Investigations by CNN Brazil suggest Ramagem departed Brazil in September, initially traveling by plane to Boa Vista, Roraima, before continuing his journey by car towards the border, potentially transiting through Venezuela or Guyana en route to the United States.

According to the STF, Ramagem leveraged his position as director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin) to orchestrate the monitoring of political opponents and facilitate attacks on Brazil’s electoral system. The Court had previously mandated that Ramagem surrender his passport and remain within the country – conditions he failed to meet.

Arrest of Celso Rodrigo de Mello

The arrest of de Mello is directly linked to the ongoing investigation into Ramagem’s flight. While details remain scarce due to the secrecy order, the Federal Police have confirmed they are not commenting on ongoing actions.

De Mello’s defense team maintains his innocence, stating that “the decision is being appealed.” A statement released by the defense advisory emphasized the importance of respecting “due legal process and the presumption of innocence, highlighting that any early conclusion does not match the facts.”

Implications and Ongoing Investigation

This development underscores the seriousness of the charges against Ramagem and the determination of Brazilian authorities to bring him to justice. The investigation’s focus on potential collaborators in Ramagem’s escape raises questions about the extent of the network involved in the alleged attempted coup d’état. The case remains fluid, and further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
