Rangers players celebrate (Reuters)
Over and done. The playoff stage of the Champions League qualifiers was concluded this evening (Wednesday) with three games, which completed the picture of the 32 teams in the group stage. Dinamo Zagreb beat Buda Glimt, Glasgow Rangers qualified at the expense of PSV Eindhoven, while FC Copenhagen also beat Trabzonspor.
PSV Eindhoven – Glasgow Rangers 1:0 (3:2)
At the end of a great battle between the two teams, the Scots advanced to the group stage of the Champions League thanks to Antonio Mirko-Kolac’s winning goal in the second leg. In the first match between the two, Ibrahim Sangra put the Dutch in the lead, Mirko-Kolak and Thom Laurens converted, but Armando Obispo equalized the score and ended the match at 2:2. As far as Rangers are concerned, this is a tremendous achievement, given the fact that only a few years ago they played in the fourth division in Scotland.
Trabzonspor – FC Copenhagen 0:0 (2:1)
After a game that did not rise to a high level, the team from Denmark qualified for the group stage thanks to their victory in the first game, where Victor Klaasson and Lucas Laragher scored for them. The Turks, on the other hand, who hosted the rematch, failed to erase the 2:1 from the previous game and missed a historic qualification to the best league in the world. Anastasios Bakastes was responsible for Trabzonspor’s only goal in the playoffs.
Dinamo Zagreb – Buda Glimt 1:4 (2:4)
The game that officially sealed the playoffs. After making a big surprise with a 0:1 victory in the first game, the humble team from Norway wanted to complete the task and record a historic qualification on their part, but failed in the task at the end of extra time and will settle for the group stage of the Europa League. Miroslav Orsic and Bruno Petkovic scored, Albert Grunback scored and sent the game to overtime, where Josip Dormic and Petar Bukac scored near the end and sent his team to the group stage of the Champions League.
