the New York Rangers are adjusting their lineup in the face of injuries to key players, recalling defenseman Scott Morrow and goalie Spencer Martin from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League. Veteran goalie Jonathan Quick is slated to start against the Buffalo Sabres and is expected to shoulder the majority of the goaltending responsibilities during Igor Shesterkin‘s absence.

The team is focused on maintaining composure amidst the challenges. “The message is that we’ve got to control what we can and stay in the moment, let’s look at the one game in front of us and let’s put our best effort on the ice,” a team spokesperson stated. “If we play a team game and compete hard, we believe we have what it takes to be competitive. Obviously,we’re a better team with those guys in the lineup, but this provides opportunities for others to step up.”

Did you know? – Igor Shesterkin is the first Rangers goalie to lead the NHL in games played at the All-Star break since Henrik Lundqvist in 2011-12.

Shesterkin, who leads the NHL in games played this season with 34 starts in 44 games, boasts a record of 17-12-4 with a 2.45 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage. His absence creates a significant void, but the Rangers express confidence in their goaltending depth.

Quick, despite a 3-6-2 record in 11 games (10 starts), has demonstrated strong performance with a 2.23 GAA and a .919 save percentage. He recently made 15 saves on 18 shots in relief of Shesterkin on Monday, showcasing his ability to step up in crucial moments. “I’m pretty confident with our goalie group even without ‘Shesty’,” one player remarked. “‘Quickie’ has been unbelievable. He stepped up the last game too. He’s capable of that and has proven himself many times.”

The loss of both Shesterkin and defenseman Adam Fox will require heightened attention to detail. “Those are two of our best players, if not our best players,” explained a defenseman. “We’re in the race, so we can’t dwell on setbacks. A good week can quickly change our position.”

Currently seventh in the Metropolitan Division and 14th in the Eastern Conference, the Rangers are only three points shy of securing a wild card spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Adding a positive note, forward J.T. Miller is returning to the lineup after missing seven games due to an upper-body injury sustained against the Philadelphia Flyers on December 20. Miller has recorded 22 points (10 goals,12 assists) in 35 games and has been named to Team USA’s roster for the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina. “Losing two guys like ‘Shesty’ and ‘Foxy’ hurts,” a forward acknowledged.”Getting a guy back like J.T. obviously makes it a little bit less painful.”

However, the team faces another roster concern as forward Alexis Lafreniere was ill and did not participate in Wednesday’s practice, leaving his availability for Thursday’s game uncertain.
