Almost two months after his last public appearance, Army General Raúl Castro once again appeared in the media spotlight by attending the inaugural session of the Baraguá 2023 Strategic Exercise, which began on Thursday and concludes this Friday throughout the country.

In the meeting held by the Ministry of the Interior, “the preparation that the country is carrying out to guarantee defense, State security and internal order was reported, with high training of the forces and the modernization of the technique.” », indicated a report from the newspaper Granma, official organ of the Communist Party of Cuba.
The note adds that this type of maneuvers are carried out “with the objective of consolidating the training and cohesion of the management and command structures of the Ministry of the Interior and the Revolutionary Armed Forces, in close connection with our people.”

Beyond the content of the conclave, what draws attention is the new appearance of Castro, who at 92 years of age is increasingly seen less and less in the political and social context of Cuba. This year he has participated in less than 10 public events, and the last two date back to last September.
In the middle of that month, he received the Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), the Portuguese António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres, in Havana during his visit to Cuba to attend the G-77 + China Summit.
And just a week later, on September 25, he received the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel upon his return to the island from New York, after participating in the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
Raul Castro left the presidency of Cuba in April 2018 and three years later he did the same with the position of first secretary of the PCC. However, at the beginning of this year he was again elected as a deputy to the National Assembly of People’s Power and, although he no longer holds any political position, he continues to receive the treatment of Leader of the Cuban Revolution.
