The US Navy destroyer Chafee, which has been operating in the Sea of Japan for several days, approached the territorial waters of Russia and attempted to cross the state border on October 15, the Defense Ministry reported. The anti-submarine ship “Admiral Tributs” of the Russian Pacific Fleet warned the American destroyer about the inadmissibility of such actions, but the US Navy ship ignored this warning.
“This is just a provocation – and nothing else. Provocative confrontation. The Russian Navy carries out its usual activities for the protection of territorial waters, and the fact that these provocations are periodically observed across all seas is a characteristic of the peculiarities of today’s diplomacy. Since the navy in peacetime is a demonstration of the strength of the flag in the responsible zones of the state, ”Khmyrov said.
He described the actions of the American destroyer as dangerous maneuvering: Chafee changed its direction of movement when the Russian ship “Admiral Tributs” was less than 60 meters away.
After the incident, the Russian Defense Ministry called in the American military attaché. “The representative of the US Armed Forces was informed of the position of the Russian military department in connection with an attempt by the US Navy destroyer Chafee to violate the state border of the Russian Federation in the Peter the Great Bay area on October 15,” the Defense Ministry said.
