An unexpected welcoming committee. While returning from a trip to Beirut to express his “solidarity” with the Lebanese people and once again call for the “restoration of peace in the region”, Jean-Luc Mélenchon was heckled at Roissy-Charles airport -de-Gaulle during his return to France on Wednesday evening.

“Rebellious, Hamas thanks you” chanted some activists, brandishing signs on which the same slogan was written, with calligraphy and a color code reminiscent of those of the Palestinian Islamist movement. The action was claimed by activists “Nous Vivrons”, a “citizen action collective against anti-Semitism”.

Pointing out a “more than doubtful positioning”

“Our objective is to denounce the support of certain rebels, of certain elected officials in our country, for terrorist organizations, such as Hamas or Hezbollah,” specifies “Nous Vivrons” to Le Parisien. More broadly, the collective wants to point out “their more than doubtful positioning on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, in particular since October 7”. “Their obsession with this subject, more than with any other international conflict, raises serious questions,” conclude the activists.

On the French left, after a series of tensions, the situation in the Middle East led in October and November to the implosion of the Nupes coalition, notably due to the refusal of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and his inner circle to qualify Hamas of “terrorist”.
