Tourism made a positive start in 2024, as according to the data announced today by the Bank of Greece, travel traffic in the first month of the year recorded a 16% increase, pushing the corresponding receipts above 278 million euros.
A surplus of 112.6 million euros in the travel balance
In particular, according to the provisional data published by the Bank of Greece, the travel balance in January 2024 showed a surplus of 112.6 million euros, compared to a surplus of 54.6 million euros in the corresponding month of 2023. Travel receipts climbed to 278.3 million euros, compared to 219 million euros in the corresponding month of 2023, marking a jump of 27.1%, while an increase of 0.7% was also observed in travel payments (January 2024: 165.7 million euros, January 2023: 164, 4 million euros).
Average spend per trip up 9.7%
According to the BoE, the increase in travel receipts is due to both the 16% increase in inbound travel traffic and the average spend per trip, which increased by 9.7%. Net receipts from the provision of travel services offset the goods balance deficit by 4.2% and contributed 25.8% to total net receipts from services.

In more detail, receipts from residents of the EU-27 countries showed an increase of 63.3%, which amounted to 149.0 million euros, while also receipts from residents of countries outside the EU-27 increased by 1% (January 2024: €126.5 million, January 2023: €125.2 million). The increase in collections from residents of EU countries. was a result of the increase in receipts from residents of the euro area countries by 49.6% (January 2024: €115.5 million, January 2023: €77.2 million), as well as the increase in receipts from residents of the EU countries outside the euro zone by 138.8%, to 33.5 million euros.
