Built-in wardrobes made of oak veneer, parquet floor and dark muted colors. A newly renovated apartment in a functionalist building in Prague’s Holešovice still recalls the atmosphere of the First Republic, but it can already be lived in in a modern way. Architect Markéta Bromová adjusted the layout without losing the original elements and genius loci of the apartment.

“We tried to preserve the character of the space, but on the other hand, we felt the need to adapt it to the current demands for housing and, last but not least, to the demands of the owner,” explains the founder of the Markéta Bromová Architekti studio, adding that the transformation of the layout was somewhat facilitated by the reinforced concrete skeleton of the house by the architect Eugena Rosenberg: “From a structural point of view, the modification was only cosmetic, but the skeleton allowed us to connect the rooms more easily.”

By knocking down the partitions, an open space with a kitchen and a living room was created in the 125 square meter apartment. At the request of the owners, the architects designed a niche in the bedroom for a second bathroom with sliding glass. The main sanitary facility is then hidden in the corridor behind a built-in oak cupboard, which matches the original elements of the First Republic.
