Rescue operations have been launched in the Kumarasamypuram area in Kilinochchi after deactivating explosives and ammunition were identified.
A large quantity of weapons and ammunition are being recovered from the land behind the primary school in the Kumarasamypuram area under the Kilinochchi Dharmapuram police division.
According to the information received by the Kilinochchi Military Intelligence, the police were informed about the explosives yesterday.
Dharmapuram Police obtained permission from the Kilinochchi Magistrate’s Court and commenced the excavation work today.
Ri-56 rifles and ammunition have so far been recovered during the excavations.
Police, Special Operations Forces and the Army in charge of the area are working together on the excavation.
Police said the recovered guns and ammunition were found to be rusty and would be inspected after the completion of the excavation work and action would be taken as per the court order.
It is noteworthy that information has come out that an LTTE camp has been found on the private land where the explosives were recovered.
