Remittances from overseas entrepreneurs have declined

Remittances from Sri Lankans working abroad, the main source of foreign exchange for Sri Lanka, have further declined in November.

According to the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the total amount received from Sri Lankans working abroad last November was $ 271.4 million.

The total value of dollars received from overseas professionals in November 2020 was $ 611.7 million. Compared to this, it has got 55.6 percent less this year.

Meanwhile, the value of foreign exchange earned in the first 11 months of 2021 was $ 5,166.3 million. However, the value of the dollar received during the same period last year was 6 thousand 291.2 million.

$ 317.4 million was remitted from overseas last October. $ 630.7 million was remitted in October 2020 and $ 49.6 million less this year than last year.

Meanwhile, the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Ajith Nivat Cabral, had said that remittances from abroad to Sri Lanka should be sent only through official channels and that sending money in unofficial ways would knowingly or unknowingly facilitate illegal activities.
